Having problems setting up your network?

Broadband in Perth

ADSL allows 24hr access, 7 days a week via the Internet! It uses the frequency spectrum between 0kHz and 4kHz for your telephone service and 20kHz to 2.2MHz for data transfer over the copper line. This line provides asymmetric transmission of data, with 256Kbits/s - 1.5Mbit/s downstream (to the user) and up to 256Kbit/s upstream, depending upon the line length and line/loop condition. ADSL is transmitted on the existing PSTN copper cable network through the normal telephone twisted-pair lines.

The cable network is a Hybrid Fibre Cable network and uses both optical fibre cables and coaxial cables in a configuration that ensures high quality television transmission at low cost. This Hybrid Fibre Cable network has the capacity to carry a lot more information than just Pay TV. It can also carry high speed data communications services using a special modem built for the purpose. Generically, pay TV services carried by such Hybrid Fibre Cables are called Cable TV or sometimes just "Cable." Similarly the high-speed data services are called Cable Modem services or sometimes this is abbreviated to just "Cable".

Domain hosting made easy  [see 'Your own Web Domain' on main menu]

Want to own your own domain and run your own web/mail servers? Don't want to pay others for web hosting and have limited email addresses? It can be done! Even with broadband and dynamic IP addressing.

Most broadband services come with a dynamic IP address meaning you may be given a new address every time you reboot or when network failures occur. Not good for domain hosting on your own system.

In the past you could either have one of those dynamic domain names that have part your name and part hosting company name (ie yourname.hostdomain.com) or you pay for hosting your domain at an ISP site and maybe redirect to your own system.

One dynamic DNS site, and there are plenty of others, allow you to register your own domain (www.YOURDOMAIN.com) on their DNS servers to point to your system even if your IP address changes. This includes your own email domain space (xyz@YOURDOMAIN.com). Of course you need to run your own web server and/or email server on your system. You can have your email hosted at a site to allow collection of your emails

For a one time donation DynDNS.org allow the setup of exactly what you want in a domain name (not including domain registration fees). Just  register your domain name (at any of a number of domain registries) and point your domain to the DynDNS.org DNS servers. You will still need to pay a yearly registration fee for the domain name. Then all that is needed is client software running on your system to update DynDNS.org with your IP address when it changes. DynDNS.org provide a selection of clients to run which will suit you that are either shareware or free.

Then again you can use one of DynDNS.org's own domains like YOURNAME.mine.nu or YOURNAME.homedns.org . Again DynDNS.org is not the only dynamic DNS provider. I found DynDNS.org to meet my needs, you may find another provider to suit yours.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

A couple of things I do need to say at this point, if you intend to run a web/email server then make sure you know what you are doing or at least have someone that does set up your system. There are a number of web servers out there that do not have patching done on them to stop infection from virus' like Code Red which infects other web servers etc. My server is constantly being probed/attacked, thankfully I have patches and utilities to stop infection. People who run servers without taking some care in setting them up don't deserve to even use a PC! The same applies to email servers where others on the net may route their mail floods/spam via your mail server leaving you in a predicament. Emails have trails to determine where emails come from, if someone uses your server to send out to the net then YOU are held responsible. Most servers even though are meant to be 'Zero Administration' still need some form of maintenance or upgrading of some sort at some time.

Many people don't even realise that that their PC had a web server installed with the operating system, that's running and now possibly infected!

If you need help to set up anything then CRY OUT! There are many people only willing to help, including me. Email Support@NonTaurus.Com
